Crochet Ribbon Heart Cakes: A Free Crochet Pattern for the Perfect Valentine’s Day Gift

Materials Needed
- Milk cotton yarn (5ply) in black and 2 shades of pink.
- 2.5mm hook
- Stuffing material
- Paper cardboard
- Darning needle, stitch markers, glue, scissors
Crochet Abbreviations
Abbreviations are in US terminology.
- mr – magic ring
- ch – chain
- st – stitch
- R – round / row
- sc – single crochet
- inc – increase
- dec – decrease
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- BLO – back loop only
- slst – slip stitch
- * – repeat
- [ ] – total stitch count in each round
First Applique
Begin with baby pink yarn and make a slip knot.
R1 16ch, insert your hook into the 4th ch and make 4dc into that ch, 1dc in each ch for 5 times, 5dc in one ch,1dc in each ch for 5 times, 7dc in one ch. Continue to crochet into the lower parts of the chain, 1dc in each ch for 3 times, 5dc dec together (you can see how to make this “dc dec” in this part), 1dc in each ch for 3 times, 3dc in one ch, 1slst (into the 1st dc) [36 dc]
R2 3ch, 1dc inc in each st for 4 times (see how to make “dc inc” in this clip), 1dc in each st for 7 times, 5dc in one stitch , 1dc in each st for 7 times, 1dc inc in each st for 7 times, 1dc, 5dc dec together,1dc, 1dc inc in each st for 3 times, 1slst (into the 1st dc) [50 dc]
- Cut the yarn.
Second Applique
Make R1 and R2 the same way as the first applique, in the same color.
R3 3ch, BLO 1dc in each stitch, connect the round with 1slst [50 dc]
R4-R6 3ch, 1dc in each stitch, connect the round with 1slst (3 rounds) [50 dc]
- Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Connecting the two appliques
- Before sewing the pieces together, cut a paper cardboard as the same size as the heart and put it into the base of the 2nd applique so that the cake turns out nice and sturdy.
- Use stitch markers to position the two pieces in the right places and sew the first piece into BLO of the 2nd applique.
- When you are almost finished with sewing, start stuffing the cake.

Cake’s Cream
- Use a deeper shade of pink yarn.
- Insert the hook into any FLO at the back of the1st piece that we left while sewing the hearts together.
(3ch, 4dc Bob stitch, skip 2 stitches, 1slst into the 3rd stitch)* repeat till the end of the round.

- Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.
- With the same process, make another cream puff into the FLO of the 2nd piece’s R3.
Mini Heart
Use a baby pink yarn or any color you prefer and start with a magic ring.
R1 6sc in mr [6]
R2 (1sc, 1inc)*3 [9]
- Cut the yarn and make another piece the same way but after the 2nd piece, DO NOT cut the yarn.
- We’ll connect the two pieces in R3.
R3 Insert your hook into the 3rd stitch of the first piece and make 1sc into that stitch. Continue crocheting 1sc into each stitch of the 1st piece. There will be a total of 9sc on the 1st piece. Then, make 1sc in each stitch of the 2nd piece. [18]

R4 (7sc, 1dec)*2 [16]
R5 1sc in each stitch [16]
R6 (2sc, 1dec)*4 [12]
- Stuff the heart.
R7 6dec [6]
- Cut the yarn and close the heart.

Small Cream (to decorate around the mini heart)
- Use a deeper shade of pink yarn or the color you used for the cake’s creams.
- Start with a slip knot.
(3ch, 4dc Bob stitch into the 1st ch)*6
- After getting 6 Bob st in total, insert your hook into the very 1st chain of the first Bob st and make 1 slst to make a ring.
- Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.
- Glue this circle of cream on the top surface of the cake.
- Sew or glue the heart in the middle of this cream.

Ribbons around the Cake
- Using any color of your choice, add ribbons around the top of the cake.
