Materials Needed

  • Cotton/ acrylic yarn or sports yarn (5 ply) in pink and white
  • 3mm crochet hook
  • Darning needle and scissors

Crochet Abbreviation 

Abbreviations are in US terminology.

  • ch – Chain 
  • R – round / row 
  • sc – single crochet 
  • inc – increase
  • dec – decrease
  • [ ] – total stitch count in each round
  • * – repeat

Body Base

Start with a slip knot, using any color that you prefer.

R1 39ch, Starting from 2nd ch form the hook, 1sc into each ch. [38]

R2-R36 ch1 and Turn,1sc into each st. (35 rows) [38]

  • Fold the piece in half and crochet the opposite sides together to form the purse.
  • Since we made 36 rows, there will be 18sc from closing each side.
  • When you have finished closing the one side, cut the yarn and do the same to the other side.

Flap

  • Attach the yarn into the very first row of the base, watch here for a more detailed explanation. Crochet along the lower parts of the chains.

R1 ch1, 1sc into each lower part of the ch. [38]

R2 ch1 and turn, 1sc into each st.[38]

R3-R8 ch1 and turn, 1sc into each st. (6 rows) [38]

R9 ch1 and turn, 1dec, 34sc, 1dec [36]

R10 ch1 and turn, 1dec, 32sc, 1dec [34]

R11 ch1 and turn, 1dec, 30sc, 1dec [32]

R12 ch1 and turn, 1dec, 28sc, 1dec [30] 

  • Cut the yarn.

Crochet along the three sides of the flap to smoothen out the edges.

  • Insert your hook into the 1st side of the flap, bring the yarn, start with 1ch and 1sc into the same stitch. Continue crocheting 1sc into each row of the side. Since we made 12 rows for the flap, there will be 12sc from crocheting along the side.
  • Make 1sc into each st of the last row of the flap. There will be 30 sc.
  • Make 1sc into each row of the last (aka 3rd side) of the flap. There will be 12sc.
  • Ch1, cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Strings

  • Use a different yarn color for the strings to make them pop.
  • Insert your hook in the middle of the fifth row of the Flap, counting from the bottom. Bring the yarn and make 43ch (or more if you want a longer string). Cut the yarn.
  • To add another strap, Close the pencil case, count 3 rows down the flap and make another 43ch in the middle. Cut the yarn.
